Kitchen Transformation

Works are now complete to this impressive listed Victorian property in Edinburgh. The clients asked us to relocate the kitchen from the small rear annex into the main house itself.

New ground plan

The key design moves were:

• View of the new space from the front hall by creating a new internal window

• Large windows onto the south facing garden

• Converting the annex into a spacious home office by exposing the roof timbers and lowering the floor

Before: Previously the space felt dark despite facing south as the original openings were comparatively small for the size of the room

After: Full height glazing opens up the space and a new contemporary kitchen plus island fully optimises the space.

New Window: From the hallway, we created a new window which gives a direct view through the kitchen to the rear garden, which opens up the hallway which was dark and felt very contained. (Photo taken during construction)

Before: The old kitchen felt small, cold and dark.

Old Kitchen/ New Study: In progress. We insulated the walls floors and ceiling, lowered the floor and raised the ceiling dramatically express the roof timbers. We als created a large picture window overlooking the south facing garden.

We went through various design options including various extensions, however retaining, editing and upgrading the existing footprint proved to be the most effective solution and the clients are absolutely delighted with their new spaces.
