Two of our planning applications were successfully approved this week! Both within Edinburgh, one in Meadowbank is a rear extension which deals with a 1.7m level difference, and the other in Duddingston is a side extension as a separate annex.
Duddingston: Planning approval is to convert the garage into a separate annex
Meadowbank: Concept Sketch
At Meadowbank, we created a new social space at garden level, but opened it up to the existing kitchen and dining areas.
The roof form follows the steps down to 2.4m, but then changes with an upwards sloping eaves to optimize the morning sunlight, and to bring height into the space and to match the 4m height of the neighbouring extension.
Meadowbank: The side elevation rises from 2.4m to 4.0m in height
Meadowbank: Elevations and Section
At Duddingston, we developed with the client their idea of a pitched ‘lean to’ extension which was initially going to be an extension to the main house. However through the design process we demonstrated that through some careful ‘edits’ and removals, the house was large enough within its existing footprint, and that the extension could be designed as a separate annex space used for either guests or for rental income.

Both clients are delighted with their individual designs and the approval process. We’re currently developing both designs to warrant approval stage, then work will move onto site next year.
